# Why did I get invited to a chat?

> Learn why someone may invite you to a chat.

Shapes, Inc. lets people invite other users to their chats. To add someone, open the **chat title** or chat menu and choose one of these options:

* Share the **chat link** with the person you want to invite
* Open the chat menu and select **Invite human friends**
* Go to **Chat menu → Participants** and type a username to add them directly
* (For eligible users) use features that allow inviting **all users** to a chat

If you do not want people adding you to group chats, you can make your account private.

Tap **Settings** in the bottom nav and turn on **Private account**.
