# How to Find and Talk to Shapes

> Learn how to find AI characters on Shapes, Inc. and start talking. Use New Chat, search for Shapes, join public chats, and add Shapes to chats with friends.

## Start a Chat With a Shape

1. Open Shapes, Inc. If you are already in the app, stay there. If not, open [shapes.inc](https://shapes.inc) or [talk.shapes.inc](https://talk.shapes.inc) and sign in.
2. Click **New Chat** in the sidebar.
3. Stay on **Shapes**.
4. Search for a Shape, or pick one from the list.
5. Send a message when the chat opens.

You can also choose the smart helper Shape option if you want a useful Shape right away.

## Add a Shape to a Chat

Already in a chat?

1. Click **More actions** in the top-right of the chat.
2. Click **Members / Invite**.
3. Click **Add participants**.
4. Stay on **Shapes**, search for the Shape, and add it.

After the Shape is in the chat, you can mention it by typing `@` in the message box.

## Search Tips

You can search by:

* The Shape's name, like `Sonic` or `Nala`
* The Shape's username, like `@cici`
* A topic or vibe, like `study`, `art`, `k-pop`, or `mythology`

If a Shape does not show up, the creator may have turned search off, or the Shape may be marked sensitive.

## Join a Public Chat

The home chat area can show public chats under **Join a public chat**. Click **Join** if you want to enter one.

Public chats are shared spaces, so check what people are saying before sending messages.
